1987年　鳥取県西伯郡伯耆町に生まれる。

2005年　有田窯業大学校入学

2008年　同校卒業後　大山焼久古窯にて修行中。

1986: Born in Saihaku-cho, Saihaku-gun, Tottori-ken.

2005: Entered the Arita pottery-industry college.

2008: Graduated from the Arita pottery-industry college.

Studies under his father Toshiyuki Suzuki by KUGO-GAMA kiln now.

 

 

 

のどかな自然の中に石州瓦の赤茶色の屋根が美しい出雲地方特有の建築美を感じさせる出西窯があります。

工房には夏でも涼しい風が吹き込み、自然の中で研修生を含めて約15名が作陶されています。

私も初めて窯を訪れた時に人数に驚いたのですが、手仕事で陶器を作られている窯場として、出西窯は山陰でも屈指の大所帯の窯です。

 

There is SHUSSAI-GAMA Kiln which impresses construction beauty peculiar to the Izumo district where the reddish brown roof of a SEKISHU roofing tile is beautiful into peaceful nature.
Cool winds blow in into a studio also for summer, and about 15 persons including a trainee are making pottery in nature.

When kiln was visited for the first time, I was surprised at a potter's number, and SHUSSAI-GAMA Kiln is kiln of a leading household of a large family also in the San-in district as a kiln place which is making ceramics by hand labor.

 

出西窯では、出雲地方の3箇所で採取した原土を水と混ぜ合わせて精製し、粘土を製造しています。

 精製には時間を要します。原土から不純物を取り除いて粘土分だけを取り出し、ペースト状になった粘土を素焼の鉢に盛ってさらに水分を抜き、ほど良い固さになったものを土練機にかけてから室で熟成させます。

In SHUSSAI-GAMA Kiln, the original ground extracted at three places of the Izumo district is mixed with water, and is refined, and clay is manufactured.

 Refining takes time.

Impurities are removed from the original ground, only a part for clay is taken out, paste clay is piled in unglazing bowls and moisture is extracted further, and after putting the clay which became hardness moderate after that into a clay dough mixer, it's made to ripe with a container (MURO).

 

出西窯の窯は6連房登り窯です。
2012年現在で年に3-4回、6連全てを使い作品が焚かれています。6連全てに作品を詰めると、訳5000点の作品が入ります。
私も多くの窯と取引がありますが、この回数は、薪焚きの登り窯で近年ではとても多いと思います。

The kiln of SHUSSAI-GAMA Kiln is a six-room climbing kiln.
The work is burned by the year 3 to 4 times using all six rooms as of 2012.

When works are filled in all six rooms, the work of 5000 translations will enter.

 
Although I also have many kiln and transactions, this number of times thinks that it is very large in recent years with a firewood firing climbing kiln.

燃料は松割木で最高1260℃から1270℃に達するまで、4 人が交代で一昼夜薪を投げ入れます。

Four persons throw in firewood by turns one whole day and night until fuel amounts to 1270 ℃ from a maximum of 1260 ℃ with pine's firewoods.

出西窯　略歴

 

1947(昭和 22)年

8 月、5 名の青年（同人：井上寿人、陰山千代吉、多々納弘光、多々納良夫、中島空慧）と 2 名の賛助者の協力をもって創業する。

斐川町出西多々納重成邸内に仕事場を建設し、陶技の研究にとりくむ。
 

1948(昭和 23)年

9 月、初窯を出す。

イギリスの工芸家ウィリアム・モリスの書に影響を受ける。

河井寛次郎先生、浜田庄司先生に会い、民藝の話を聞き絶大な感銘を受ける。

 

1949(昭和 24)年

金津滋氏の指導を受け、後に民藝運動に参加することを一同決心する。

地名により出西窯と名を定める。

松江・袖師窯の尾野敏郎氏の縁で柳宗悦先生の知遇を得る。

 

1950(昭和 25)年

初夏、隣村の隆法寺住職山本空外上人 (広島大学教授) に師事し、仏教に集団の理念を見いだす。

夏、河井寛次郎先生来訪、指導を受ける。日常の食器類を作り始める。

 

 

1951(昭和 26)年

10 月、柳宗悦先生来訪する。

 

1952(昭和 27)年

10 月、吉田璋也先生に師事し、鳥取民藝協団に参加する。浜田庄司先生の指導を受けて益子に学び、また丹波、五条坂に学ぶ。

 

1953(昭和 28)年

5 月、バーナード・リーチ先生が舩木道忠工房隣の丸三陶器工場に一か月ほど滞在して制作をおこない、通って教えを受ける。

6 月、日本民藝協会全国大会が鳥取で開催され、その後に、柳先生、浜田先生、リーチ先生が来訪し、実地に指導を受ける。

 

1955(昭和 30)年

4 月、中出西に仕事場を移す。通産大臣賞を受賞する。秋、高松宮殿下御成り。この年、組織は、組合員一人一口平等の経営参加発言を規定する企業組合を適当と選んで、企業組合出西窯とする。 (今日に至る)
 

 

1956(昭和 31)年

5 月、日本民藝協会第 10 回全国協議会が松江及び出雲で開催され、柳宗悦先生、河井寛次郎先生、浜田庄司先生等同協会一行を迎える。同協議会で各地の新作民藝の努力に対し、当年の重点的指導、援助を与えるものに選ばれる。
 

 

1957(昭和 32)年

10 月、第 5 回鳥取民藝協団展に出品する。

 

 

1961(昭和 36)年

11 月、バーナード・リーチ先生が出雲民藝協会認証式出席後に来訪、指導を受ける。

 

1962(昭和 37)年

夏、柳宗理先生初めて来訪する。

 

1964(昭和 39)年

10 月、バーナード・リーチ先生来訪、指導を受ける。

水害により仕事場の移転を計画する。
 

 

1966(昭和 41)年

現在地に仕事場を移転する。

 

1970(昭和 45)年

浜田庄司先生が再度来訪、指導を受ける。
 

1974(昭和 49)年

1 月 13 日、火災により仕事場焼失。衆恩に支えられ直ちに再建する。

 

1975(昭和 50)年

安田信託銀行広島支店長とのご縁により同支店にて出西窯新作陶器展が始まる。

 

1977(昭和 52)年

10 月、東京銀座・たくみにて出西窯創業 30 周年記念展を開催する。

 

1979(昭和 54)年

鈴木繁男先生より指導を受け始める。
 

 

1980(昭和 55)年

元烏取民藝美術館の建物２棟をゆずり受け、出西窯敷地内に移築し、吉田璋也記念館及び出西研修館とする。

 

1984(昭和 59)年

金津滋氏、長岡名産堂、ＴＳＫとのご縁によりＴＳＫ展示ホールにて出西窯展が始まる。

11 月、出西窯内にて「炎の祭り」を開催する (以降毎年) 。

 

1986(昭和 61)年

3 月、東広島市立美術館主催山陽・山陰路の現代陶藝展－後期展：山陰路のやきもの展－に招待出品「鉄釉丸紋土瓶」他。

 

1987(昭和 62)年

4 月、創業 40 周年を記念して「無自性」 (「衆縁に従るが故に必ず自性無し」) の碑を建立する。
 

 

1992(平成 4)年

東京銀座・たくみにて創業 45 周年記念出西窯展を開催する。

 

1993(平成 5)年

10 月、東京国立近代美術館工芸館で企画展「現代の陶藝 (Ｉ) 山陰の陶窯―出西窯」が開催される。

 

1995(平成 7)年

伊丹市工藝センターにて「出西窯展」開催。

 

1996(平成 8)年

島根県ふるさと伝統工芸品の指定を受ける。

 

1998(平成 10)年

4 月、展示場「くらしの陶・無自性館」竣工。

9 月、平田市立旧本陣記念館主催「郷土の陶芸②出西窯」開催。

 

1999(平成 11)年

この頃より柳宗理先生の指導のもと、黒土瓶の復刻と柳宗理意匠の器の製作に取り組む。

 

2004(平成 16)年

柳宗理ディレクション出西窯シリーズの販売を開始する。

 

2007(平成 19)年

創業 60 周年。

展示場くらしの陶・無自性館にて記念展を開催。

 

2008(平成 20)年

10 月、国際交流基金主催「ＷＡ－現代日本のデザインと調和の精神展」

(於パリ日本文化会館) に「縁鉄砂呉須釉皿」が選ばれる (欧州各国で巡回展が開催された後、日本で帰国展の予定)。

 

2009(平成 21)年

4 月、国際交流基金主催「ＷＡ－現代日本のデザインと調和の精神展」

 (於ブタペスト応用美術館) が開催される。

 

SHUSSAI-GAMA Kiln simplified history

1947

August :

Kiln was started with cooperation of five youths and two supporters.

The workshop was built in Hikawa-cho Shussai and Shigenari Tatano's residence, and ceramic art technique was studied.
 

1948

September: First firing.

Influence was received in British craftsman William Morris's writing.

Meeting Kanjiro Kawai and Shoji Hamada, the talk of MINGEI (folk craft) was heard and they received greatest impression.

 

1949

Receiving instruction of Shigeru Kanatsu, they determined participating in a folk craft movement behind.

SHUSSAI-GAMA kiln and a name were decided by the name of a place.

Muneyoshi Yanagi's favor was obtained on the margin of Toshiro Ono of the SODESHI-GAMA kiln of Matsue.

 

1950

Early summer , Studied under RYU-HO-JI temple chief priest KU-GAI YAMAMOTO (professor of Hiroshima University) of the next village, and found out collective philosophy to Buddhism. Kanjiro Kawai visited and instruction was received in summer.

Kiln begins to make food utensils for daily use.

 

1951

Muneyoshi Yanagi visited in October.

1952

In October, Studied under Shoya Yoshida and participated in the Tottori folk craft cooperation organization.

Receive Shoji Hamada's instruction, and learn to Mashiko, and learn to Tanba and Gojo-zaka.

 

1953

In May, Bernard Leach stayed at the MARUSAN ceramics factory of a Michitada Funaki studio next door about one month, and they passed there and received the instruction.

The Japanese folk craft association all Japan convention was held in Tottori, after that, Muneyoshi Yanagi, Shoji Hamada, and Bernard Leach visited, and instruction was received by practice in June.

 

1955

The workshop was moved to NAKA SHUSSAI in April.

The Minister of International Trade and Industry prize was won. In autumn, His Imperial Highness Prince Takamatsu visited kiln.

The organization became joint enterprise cooperative SHUSSAI-GAMA kiln in that year. 

(And it continues till today)

 

1956

In May, the Japanese 10th time of folk craft association all Japan conference was held in Matsue and Izumo, and greeted the association parties, such as Muneyoshi Yanagi, Kanjiro Kawai, and Shoji Hamada.

SHUSSAI-GAMA kiln was chosen as the kiln which gives preponderant instruction of this year, and assistance to efforts of the new work folk craft of every place in the conference.
 

 

1957

Exhibited to the 5th Tottori folk craft cooperation organization exhibition in October.

 

1961

In November, Bernard Leach will receive a visit and instruction after the Izumo folk craft association inauguration attendance.

 

1962

In summer, Sori Yanagi (Munemichi Yanagi) visited kiln for the first time.

 

1964

The Bernard Leach visit and instruction were received in October. Relocation of a workshop is planned by flood damage.
 

 

1966

A workshop is relocated to a its present location.

 

1970

Shoji Hamada received a visit and instruction.
 

 

1974

A workshop is burned down by a fire on January 13.

Supported in popular goodwill and was rebuilt immediately.

 

1975

The SHUSSAI-GAMA kiln new work ceramics exhibition started by the margin with Branch Manager Yasuda Trust & Banking Hiroshima at the branch.

 

1977

The 30th anniversary exhibition of SHUSSAI-GAMA Kiln foundation will be held in the Tokyo Ginza TAKUMI in October. 

 

1979

Begun to receive instruction from Mr. Shigeo Suzuki.
 

 

1980

Two buildings of a former Tottori folk craft art museum were inherited, and it reconstructed in the SHUSSAI-GAMA Kiln site, and was considered as the Shoya Yoshida memorial hall and the Shussai training hall.

 

1984

The SHUSSAI-GAMA Kiln exhibition starts by a margin with Shigeru Kanetsu, NAGAOKA-MEISAN-DO, and TSK in a TSK exhibit hall. "

The festival of the flame" was held in SHUSSAI-GAMA Kiln in November (henceforth every year).

 

1986

March,

SHUSSAI-GAMA Kiln is invited to Higashi-Hiroshima municipal art museum sponsorship, the second-half exhibition of the contemporary ceramic art exhibition of San-yo and the San-in way, and "the pottery exhibition of the San-in way", and sends "TETSU-YUU MARU-MON DOBIN" (iron glaze circle pattern teapot) etc.

 

1987

In April, kiln commemorated the 40th anniversary of foundation and built-less self-nature / "MUJISEI" monument.

* "無自性 / MUJISEI"  (since people are efficiently employed by that of the big power of surrounding people or Nature, there is none of its distinguished services anywhere) . 
 

 

1992

The 45th anniversary SHUSSAI-GAMA Kiln exhibition of foundation was held in the Tokyo Ginza TAKUMI.

 

1993

The plan exhibition "pottery kiln SHUSSAI-GAMA Kiln of contemporary folk craft  (I) San-in" was held in Crafts Gallery, The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo in October.

 

1995

The "SHUSSAI-GAMA Kiln exhibition" holding in an Itami technical center. 

 

1996

SHUSSAI-GAMA Kiln received specification as a "Shimane home country traditional-handicrafts article." 

 

1998

April, the SHUSSAI-GAMA Kiln exhibition hall completion.

September , Hirata municipal KYU-HONJIN memorial hall sponsorship

"ceramic art ② SHUSSAI-GAMA Kiln of hometown" holding.

 

1999

Reproduction of the basis of instruction of Sori Yanagi (Munemichi Yanagi) and a black-teapot and manufacture of the vessel of a Sori Yanagi design are grappled with from these days.

 

2004

Sale of Sori Yanagi direction SHUSSAI-GAMA Kiln series is started.

 

2007

The 60th anniversary of foundation.

A commemoration exhibition is held in an exhibition hall.

 

2008

October, Japan Foundation sponsorship "WA-contemporary Japanese design and harmony moral exhibition" 

In the Paris Japan cultural center, "縁鉄砂呉須釉皿" (a edge is a plate of iron glaze and indigo glaze) was chosen. 

 

2009

April, Japan Foundation sponsorship "WA-contemporary Japanese design and harmony moral exhibition" 

The swine plague applied art hall was held.

1976年　二代藤一と結婚し鳥取へ移住

1980年-2008年　初代藤一に師事、二代藤一と共に陶芸修行

2008年　二代藤一死去、三代目を継ぐ

1971 - 1974   Studies under a ceramist and ceramic art is studied.

1976   Get married whis the 2nd Toichi , and emigrate to Tottori.

1980 - 2008   Studying under first Toichi, ceramic art study with the second generation Toichi.

2008   Inherited the third generation for the second generation Toichi passing.

2009   Recognized by Tottori traditional handicrafts person.

 

 

鍋島窯元、山本拓男さんは伝統技法の"墨弾き"と呼ばれる技法を使って、美しい作品を作っています。

ここでは、高度な技術と熟練を要する山本さんの墨弾きを工程に沿って紹介します。

 

The ceramist of Nabeshima ware and Takuo Yamamoto are making beautiful works using the technique called SUMIHAJIKI of tradition technique.
The SUMIHAJIKI technique of Mr. Yamamoto who requires high-level technique and skill is introduced.

 

 

今回、山本さんは素焼された磁器板を使って墨弾きを説明してくれました。

This time, Mr. Yamamoto explained the SUMIHAJIKI technique using the biscuit porcelain tile.

 

"線書き/Line drawing"

 

まず最初に、素焼きされた作品へ下絵を写します。

素地へ直接描く場合もありますが、今回は山本さんがあらかじめ準備してくださっていた下絵を使っています。

First, the sketch which Mr. Yamamoto drew on the biscuit work is copied.  

 

 

 

 

下絵が終わったら、撥水剤を混ぜた絵具を細い筆を使って描いていきます。

After a sketch finishes, fine lines are drawn by a thin brush using indigo glaze containing waterproofing liquid.

 

 

 

山本さんは、スイスイと手慣れた手つきで線を描いておられましたが、熟練した技と経験がなければ、ただでさえ描きにくい素地へ、さらに筆を使って線の太さも調節しながら、この様な繊細な線を描くことはとても難しいと思いました。

If there are no skilled technique and experience, it is very difficult to draw such delicate lines, adjusting the width of lines using a brush.

Although I am studying ceramic art, it is very difficult to draw something using a brush to a biscuit work!

 

 

 

 

これで線書きは終わりです。

"濃（だみ）/DAMI"

 

ここからは濃と呼ばれる作業が始まります。

The work called DAMI begins from here.

呉須絵具を太い筆に染み込ませ、水で濃度を調整しながら色を付けていきます。

Indigo glaze is infiltrated into a thick brush.

Painted by a big brush, adjusting glaze concentration using water.

 

 

 

 

 

表面張力を使って、器を傾けながら彩色していきます。

Paints using surface tension, and leaning a work.

 

 

 

水で濃度を調整しながら美しいグラデーションを付けます。
太い筆をスポイトの様に使って余分な水気を吸い取ったりもします。

Beautiful gradation is attached adjusting concentration with water.
Excessive water is sucked up using a thick brush like a syringe.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

濃が終わった作品。

The work which DAMI finished.

 

 

 

 

この後、焼成され、美しい作品の完成です。

After a DAMI process, works are fired and a beautiful work completes them.

 

 

完成した作品は、線が抜け、このようになります。

With the work after completion, lines disappear and it becomes like a photograph.

 

 

何百年と受け継がれてきた伝統技は、このように現代に受け継がれ、私たちに"美"を与えてくれています。
取材に協力していただいた山本さんに感謝しています、素晴らしい技を見させていただき有難う御座いました。

The tradition technique inherited over 100 years or more is inherited in the present age, and is continuing giving "beauty" to us.
